More and more people are getting back to, ahh… their “roots”. Literally, gardening is one of the hottest trends in America today. There are so many good reasons for this. My number one reason is that it’s flat out fun and a worthwhile escape from the grind of modern life. Leaving your worries behind and going outside to make stuff grow makes me feel good. Study after study is produced illustrating the dangers of chemicals used in the foods we buy every day. Organic gardening is an attractive way to safely grow your own food without the worry of what chemicals are doing to our bodies. What better way to spend your spare time than to grow your own vegetables that not only taste great but also benefit the environment.
Americans are finally getting the picture that disease and obesity may be traced directly back to the quality of food we eat. Right alongside the reports outlining the dangers of chemicals in store bought foods comes exciting news about how organically grown vegetables are able to help fight and prevent cancer along with many other diseases. Organic farming does not use chemicals that may have an adverse affect on your health. This is especially important when growing vegetables. Chemical companies tell us that the chemicals we use are safe if used according to direction, but research shows that even tiny amounts of poisons absorbed through the skin can cause such things as cancer, especially in children.
In addition, the environment is constantly taking a hit with pollution going directly into our food supply. The increased use of pesticides also destroys the natural predators of the very insects we try and control. This creates a vicious cycle promoting the need to continually create more powerful and more toxic pesticides.
Organic gardening helps to offset the damage done by large commercial farming. Organic gardens are designed to work hand in hand with nature, not in competition with it. Organic gardens produce food that’s never been altered with the use of chemicals or sprayed with synthetically engineered fertilizers. Organic gardening is a win win for all involved. The environment is protected; wildlife benefits and we live better longer.
Organic gardening allows for the production of large amounts of produce in a relatively small space. Your dinner table will be adorned with the freshest picked vegetables. Organically grown vegetables taste amazing and are packed with vitamins. When I used to complain to my papaw about digging potatoes he would tell me to make a game out of it. He was right gardening is fun and can help bring you family together. So turn the TV off get the family together and learn more about how to be self sufficient with your own organic garden.
